Dental hygiene tips for healthy teeth & gums

Which type of tongue cleaner is best?

Many countries have practiced tongue scraping for centuries, but the concept is relatively new. Approximately 39 percent of people worldwide brush their tongues regularly.

If your dentist has given you oral health advice, chances are your dentist does not recommend tongue scraping. They probably recommend flossing and twice-daily brushing instead when it comes to maintaining oral health. Nevertheless, you will probably see some benefits when you start scraping your tongue every day.

How to choose the best tongue scraper for you?
Choosing a tongue scraper will depend largely on your comfort level since they come in different materials and shapes:

  • Copper: Copper is antibacterial and antimicrobial and helps in neutralizing toxins. The use of copper scrapers in traditional Ayurvedic medicine dates back thousands of years. A downside to these devices is that they’re typically only available in a V-shaped design, making them difficult to use if you have a small mouth or a strong gag reflex.
  • Stainless steel: With stainless steel options available in both V and loop shapes, you can choose the right size that’s easy to clean and lasts for a long time. But Dr. Weiner warns beginners of steel-tipped types that they won’t be as gentle as their predecessors.
  • Plastic: These are the gentlest options for beginners (or those with metal sensitivities), though they may not be as effective as the others. As well as loop-style cleaners, you can also find brushes with soft bristles constructed from plastic.

Every morning, use your tongue cleaner before drinking water for best results. After sticking your tongue out so that it feels loose and heavy, work the scraper forward four or five times, rinsing your scraper after each pass, and repeat the process until all the white coating has come off.
